The U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the agency that is responsible for securing our borders. The agents are called Border Patrol Agents. A Border Patrol Agent works about fourteen hours a day and usually makes about $55k a year.

Some agents are responsible for checking the identification and paperwork of those entering the United States. Other agents are assigned to unauthorized entry points and are responsible for controlling the entrance of illegal immigrants, drugs, and weapons. The labor market for Border Control Agents is very competitive and usually has only about 200 jobs available a year. However, due to the recent entry of millions of illegal Mexican immigrants, the need for border patrol agents may increase, depending on the Homeland Security's funding.

Military Job Qualifications
To become a Border Patrol Agent, you must be a US Citizen and under 37 years of age. You must have a college degree and/or experience working in dangerous situations. You must also pass background checks, drug tests, physical examinations and medical tests. It is required that you speak Spanish, so if you aren't already fluent in Spanish you must be willing to learn.

Territory
There are approximately 18,000 border patrol agents employed by the federal government. Most patrol the 1,900 mile border of Mexico; some patrol the 5,000 mile border of Canada; and approximately 20,000 agents patrol other US entry points.
Most agents are stationed in New Mexico, California, Texas, and Arizona. Homeland Security also employs about 8,000 workers to support the border patrol agents. Some of these positions include security, lawyers, paralegals, IT specialists, investigation and compliance officers, auto mechanics, and human resource specialists.
