Ranks in the military are determined by status. There are many different examples, such as enlisted officer, non-commissioned officer, company-grade commissioned officer, field grade officer, general commissioned officer, or warrant officer. The following is an explanation of the order of military ranks. If you're considering a military career or military employment, the following is an explanation of the order of military ranks.

Enlisted Ranks in the Military
A soldier in the Army begins as a Private. After successfully completing his first few years of basic and advanced training as a Private, he then receives a promotion to Private First Class. From Private First Class, he will then be promoted to Specialist.



Non-Commissioned Job Ranks in the Military
A soldier becomes a non-commissioned officer once they are promoted to Sergeant. At this point they have several years of experience behind him. There are several different ranks that a Sergeant can follow through the span of his career. Some examples are Staff Sergeant; Sergeant First Class; Master Sergeant; and Sergeant Major.

Warrant Officers in the Army
When a non-commissioned officer has a technical specialist job, they can then compete for warrant officer appointment. Warrant officers don't have the responsibilities of command, however they still receive all the advantages of commissioned service.

Company Grade Officers in the Military
Commissioned officers all have a four-year college degree or more, and start with a Second Lieutenant military career. After serving for four years as Second Lieutenant, they are promoted to Captain.

Field Grade Officers
After the Captain serves seven years, they are promoted to Major. After eight years as a Major, they are promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. Six to eight years later, They will finally achieve the rank of Colonel.

General Officers
General officers have the experience to excel in any area of the military. It is their leadership ability, technical knowledge, and general military expertise that bring them to this prestigious position.
