The Dow Chemical Company has an exciting opportunity as a Silicones R & D Technician in Auburn. MI. The Silicones R & D Technician works as part of a Silicones Product Development team in a laboratory supporting chemists and engineers in synthesizing, developing, screening and commercializing new products aligned with a variety of industries ranging from industrial coatings to home and personal care.


- Responsible for managing, then safely executing laboratory work requests, maintaining and running relevant laboratory apparatus and testing equipment and documenting data.

- Synthesizes new molecules and prepares formulation samples with minimal supervision using standard chemical techniques and set ups.

- Independently analyzes materials to elucidate chemical structure and functionality using common analytical techniques including but not limited to: GC, FTIR, NMR. Designs and prepares formulations using mixing and compounding equipment. Performs physical property analysis such as surface tension, rheology, tensile/elongation to propose relationship between structure and property.

- Coordinates equipment maintenance, calibration and equipment troubleshooting. Maintains and updates personal knowledge for proper use of equipment via manuals and job aids, logs maintenance activities and calibration results as required. Suggests and develops new standard operating procedures (SOPs).

- Responsible for laboratory housekeeping and stocking consumable materials, chemicals, and supplies related to activities by anticipating usage rates, order lead times, and ordering/purchasing procedures. Includes appropriate knowledge of handling and storage requirements for various compounds, supplies, etc.

- Responsible for calibration, safe operation, and routine maintenance of simple and complex instruments, machinery and systems. Reports, discusses and provides solutions for any issues related to lab equipment. Proactively evaluates and revises procedures to improve efficiency, effectiveness, or safety. Makes proposals and recommendations for equipment/systems modifications.

- Understands the value of high quality data and utilizes good laboratory techniques and practices to generate such data. Accurately and reliably records readings and observations using relevant equipment and instruments. Organizes and prepares data tables and charts to present data collected in studies supported. Often prepares summaries of work and results to be included in technical reports. Interprets results of trials and experiments and documents according to Dow standards.

- Understands the group objectives and the business or groups value creating strategy and is an important contributor to the technical solutions that result in project and team success. Trains other work group members and contractors on specific work processes, equipment, machinery, for which the incumbent is a work group subject matter expert.

- Defines and implements new testing methods for development purposes. This may require creating unique configurations of existing equipment or development/fabrication of new equipment and systems.

- Uses in-depth knowledge of the technology consisting of product, test method, and lab equipment to quickly screen alternative approaches. Handles complex tasks including methods and procedures, specifically in a wet chemistry laboratory. Recommends and implements variations in approaches with little or no supervision. Holds essential know-how on safe operation of experimentation and on stewardship process, and implements these to Dow standards.

- Actively participate in work group team meetings to address safety, process improvement, problem solving, and other work group, department, and functional topics. May also participate in functional and/or business/customer teams relevant to supported technologies.

- Leads the team or work group in identifying improvement opportunities in area of Environmental, health and safety (EH & S) and implements improved EH & S practices and procedures


Required Qualifications:

- Proficiency with standard workstation software, including Word, Excel, and specialized computer-based systems, databases and/or software applications relevant to supported technologies. Work may require specialized skills for specialized equipment such as application, and analytical equipment.

- Experienced in basic chemicals laboratory operation and basic Environmental Health and Safety (EH & S) requirements such as safe operating procedures and management of change. Strong understanding and commitment to their own and the safety of others.

- Understanding of science and technology practices including the scientific method with an ability to analyze data using statistical tools.

- Understanding of when potential divergences from expectations might be patentable discoveries.

- Strong written and verbal communication skills.

- Must be able to read, write and speak English. Proficient at developing and presenting data.

- Good interpersonal skills are required.

- Must have strong multi-tasking, problem solving and time management skills. A self-starter who can identify, prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks. Ability to manage multiple tasks and have a sense of prioritization based on value and efficiency.

- Ability to work independently with high level of demonstrated project execution.

- A minimum requirement for this U.S. based position is the ability to work legally in the United States. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

- Must be willing and able to do the following:

1) Stand or walk for extended periods of time.

2) Work in such environments wearing safety equipment, such as respirators, goggles, and steel-toed shoes.

3) Work in such environments with frequent bending, reach and lifting.


- Associates degree in Chemistry or a science and/or 4 years military experience and at least 2 years of chemical laboratory and chemical synthesis experience.


- Bachelors degree in Chemistry or a science related field is required.
